The Digby Conversion of Saint Paul

The Digby Conversion of Saint Paul is an English saint’s, or “miracle” play which tells the story of Saul, who sets out for Damascus to suppress Christians, only to encounter Christ.  Blinded and confused, he finds himself on a different path, returning to Jerusalem no longer the persecutor but the persecuted.  Surrounding Saul’s story are subplots of comedy and spectacle, including two outraged devils and a drunken stable groom.

The Conversion is a drama about a journey, and this production will aim to capture the sense of journeying in a number of ways: it will be an outdoor production and, inspired by original performance conditions, the audience will move from one “station” to the next along with the actors.  We’ll also be taking this journey aspect quite literally as we take the entire production to a Bring-Your-Own-Medieval-Play Festival in Toronto, Canada.  Hosted by the Poculi Ludique Societas, this festival will bring together theater groups from all over North America and beyond for a weekend of innovative and exciting medieval drama.

Our Charlottesville performances are in Garden IX, on UVA Grounds: April 17-18, 5 pm; April 19, 1pm.  Our rain location for Friday and Saturday is St. Thomas Aquinas Church (401 Alderman Rd.).  The Toronto festival is June 5-7.
